HOT OFF THE PRESS:
Why Upcountry is One of the Most Desirable Locations to Live on Maui
While there are no set boundaries as to what determines “Upcountry,” typically the towns of Makawao, Olinda, Hali’imaile, Pukalani, and Kula are included. This region can be seen from South Maui (Kihei and Wailea) looking back up at the slopes of Haleakala. The “country” moniker stems from the fact that most of the island’s produce, flowers, cattle, and horses are found in this expansive region. Its rural, ag-based atmosphere lends itself to a slower-paced, more relaxed lifestyle.
The Maui real estate statistics over the last several years show a significant increase in demand for homes in the Upcountry area.
So, what are some of the reasons that people love living in this area?
Temperature & Weather
With the elevation ranging from 1400 ft to 4000 ft, cool to chilly temps are the norm. Combine this with year-round moderate weather including limited rainfall and substantial sunshine, and many consider this an ideal place in which to live.
Views
It never, ever gets old looking at a sunset view from the slopes of Kula, with West Maui (Kahalawai) as a backdrop. Indescribably beautiful. Take it from someone who is a bit of a sunset connoisseur! Here’s a photo I took recently from along Thompson Road in the Kēōkea area of Kula (that is Lānaʻi island in distance).
And in certain locations from Upcountry, you can see a bi-coastal view of both south & north shores during the day that can look like a giant, panoramic mural! Simply mesmerizing.
Fresh Local Food
Living Upcountry means having direct access to ‘picked-the-same-day’ produce freshness. Be sure to check out the very popular Upcountry Farmers Market in Pukalani— a Saturday morning tradition for more than 40 years. And many of the Upcountry restaurants will utilize these very same local crops to enhance the quality of their menus.
Schools
Upcountry is home to many of the most highly rated schools on the island. These include Seabury Hall, Haleakala Waldorf, Kamehameha, King Kekaulike, Kula Elementary, and Pukalani Elementary.
Restaurants, Brewery, Winery, and more . . .
The list of places to drink & eat out Upcountry keeps growing, including the grand re-opening under new owners of the Kula Lodge.
Other very popular choices include:
Casanova (Italian in Makawao since 1986)
Kula Bistro (a local favorite)
Marlow (check out the woodfired pizzas!)
Maui Bees (farm-to-table dinners)
Maui Wine (the only winery on Maui)
Mahalo Aleworks (Brewery and Tap Room)
Ocean Organic Vodka (Tour the distillery and farm)
And many, many more!
Activities
There are plenty of things to do Upcountry to keep one busy, entertained, and healthy.
These include:
Hiking in the Makawao Forest & PoliPoli State parks and into Haleakala National Park crater
Walking Thompson Road
Playing a round of golf at Pukalani Golf Course
Zipline at Skyline Hawaii
Maui Goat Yoga (read more about it in our BLOG HERE)
Ali'i Kula Lavender farm (amazing colors, smells, tastes and views)
Surfing Goat Dairy (tour the farm)
Kula Botanical Gardens
Hui No’eau Visual Arts Center (classes in arts & crafts)
Modern Conveniences and Needs in the neighborhood
Kula Hospital and Minute Medical nearby if needed
Foodland, CVS/Longs
Wisdom Flow Yoga
Anytime Fitness gym
Mangala Yoga
Kula Hardware & Nursery
Historic Calasa Garage for gas and repairs
Animal Care Hospital & Wellness Center
NAPA Auto Parts
As you can see, Upcountry residents are not compromising by living here!
And the best news, for those of you who are now convinced that Upcountry is the place to be, the real estate inventory here has been trending up for the last several months. In other words, there is a greater selection of properties available for purchase! This is yet further evidence for a more balanced market ahead.
Adding to the supply is Upcountry’s newest planned single-family community called Hoku’ula in Hali’imaile (lower Makawao). Read more about it in our BLOG HERE.
